Welcome to the website and services of SOK: Shetland’s Organisation for Knitters (“SOK”, “we”, “our”, or “us”). We are a community-rooted Scottish charity based in the Shetland Isles, dedicated to preserving and protecting Shetland’s living knitting heritage.

By accessing our website, subscribing to our newsletters, booking our workshops or training, or participating in our community events, you agree to comply with and be bound by the following Terms & Conditions. Please read them carefully.

2. Intellectual Property & Heritage Preservation

SOK Content

All content on our website and digital platforms—including text, graphics, logos, images, audio clips, oral history recordings, video tutorials, and educational resources—is the property of SOK or our content suppliers and is protected by UK and international copyright laws.

Respecting Shetland’s Heritage

A core part of SOK’s mission is to ensure public understanding of Shetland’s knitting traditions (such as Fair Isle knitting, Shetland lace, and domestic machine knitting) is authentic and respectful.

  • Material provided through our talks, workshops, and online experiences is for your personal, educational, and non-commercial use only.

  • You may not copy, reproduce, distribute, or commercially exploit any of our historical recordings, patterns, or teaching materials without our express written permission.

 

3. Workshop, Event & Training Bookings

When you book a workshop, talk, local event, or occupational training session through SOK, the following terms apply:

  • Payment: Fees for paid events must be paid in full at the time of booking. All payments are processed securely via our third-party payment providers.

  • Cancellations by You: If you need to cancel your booking, please notify us as soon as possible. Cancellations made within [e.g., 14 days] of the event may not be eligible for a refund, subject to our discretion.

  • Cancellations by Us: SOK reserves the right to cancel or reschedule events or training due to unforeseen circumstances (such as extreme Shetland weather or tutor illness). If we cancel an event, you will receive a full refund or the option to transfer your booking to an alternative date.

 

4. Community Contributions & Code of Conduct

If you interact with SOK as a local knitter, tutor, learner, volunteer, or visitor—either online or at our local spaces in Shetland—we expect all participants to maintain a respectful environment.

  • You agree not to post, share, or submit any content that is offensive, defamatory, or infringes upon the rights of others.

  • When contributing stories, skills, or historical knowledge to SOK’s recording projects, you warrant that the information is accurate to the best of your knowledge and that you have the right to share it. (Specific participation agreements will be provided for official oral history recordings).

 

5. Third-Party Links

Our website or online experiences may include links to third-party websites (e.g., local wool producers, community heritage groups, or external booking platforms). We do not control these websites and are not responsible for their content, privacy policies, or practices.

6. Limitation of Liability

While we make every effort to ensure the accuracy of the historical information, advice, and knitting techniques shared through our platform, SOK provides these materials on an "as-is" basis.

To the fullest extent permitted by Scottish law, SOK shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, or consequential damages resulting from your use of our website, participation in our workshops, or reliance on any information provided by the charity.

These Terms & Conditions, and any dispute or claim arising out of or in connection with them, shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Scotland. You agree that the courts of Scotland will have exclusive jurisdiction to settle any dispute.

We reserve the right to update or modify these Terms & Conditions at any time without prior notice. Any changes will be posted directly to this page with an updated "Effective Date." Your continued use of our website or services constitutes your acceptance of the updated terms.
